Who can remove asbestos?
You may only remove asbestos yourself if it concerns bonded asbestos (solid asbestos) that is in good condition. For solid asbestos (bonded asbestos) in poor condition (in Belgium we use the term Semi-bonded asbestos) you can work with recognized asbestos removers who have obtained the training certificate 'simple actions with asbestos'.
Recognized asbestos removers must renew this certificate annually. All other asbestos removal work MUST be done by certified asbestos removers. This includes all unbound asbestos (free asbestos). For example, we are thinking of plaster insulation, oven cables and insulated pipes.
However, solid asbestos that is difficult to remove must also be treated by certified asbestos removers. This could be a gutter in poor condition, or a weathered asbestos cement window frame or fountain.
Hire certified asbestos removers
You can remove asbestos yourself, but if you want to be on the safe side, we strongly recommend that you hire a certified asbestos removal company. Certified asbestos removers are in possession of an annual training certificate. This ensures that an asbestos removal company has the expertise to remove asbestos from your home safely and professionally.
Who can obtain a permit as an asbestos remover?
Annual inspection and certification is required to maintain recognition as an asbestos remover. Anyone can complete this. Because asbestos removal is a demanding task, many contractors seek accreditation as licensed asbestos removers. Various demolition companies have also applied for this certification.
Asbestos plates to container park
If you choose to remove the asbestos yourself, you can take your asbestos waste to the container park. Please note that asbestos must be put in special packaging - asbestos bags. You can find it at your hardware store. Special containers are available at most recycling centers for the disposal of limited quantities of asbestos.
For specific guidance on the best way to remove asbestos, we recommend visiting the recycling center's website. You can also collect asbestos with a container service, but keep in mind that this will incur additional costs.
Certified asbestos removers take over this task and ensure not only the removal but also the disposal in accordance with the applicable measures.
